Kalauao Falls

This artwork is a special one as it resembles the lush mauka landscape in ʻAiea. A reminder to connect with our natural environment and to those who have come before us. Located on the ʻAiea Loop Trail, “Kalauao Falls” is represented in this piece where the waters give life and nutrients to kalo. Kalo plays an important role in providing food and sustenance to our community and connects us with culture. As we connect with nature whose roots run deep, we connect with our past and gain wisdom for our future. Similarly to this renovation project, this piece breathes new life into the environment that surrounds it.

Mahalo for the opportunity to create for those who visit this space.

About the Artist: Jack Soren

Jack Soren is a multifaceted artist of Native Hawaiian and Māori descent whose work bridges traditional culture with contemporary expression. Born and raised on Oahu’s North Shore, Jack’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in his Hawaiian heritage, the island’s natural beauty, and his lifelong connection to surfing.

Āiwaiwa and the Days of Kō mural at Aiea Shopping Center

Āiwaiwa and the Days of Kō

Artist Chris Miyashiro’s dynamic mural, titled Āiwaiwa and the Days of Kō, can be found on the second level, near McDonald’s. The art is an anthropological, agricultural and spiritual study of the area, ʻAiea. According to Miyashiro, viewers can embark on an imaginative experience of the lush springs of Waiolaʻa, the Keaīwa, and the heiau hoʻola. “Remember this place, the students gathering herbs and sitting in prayer. See again the spirit of this land, moving through the days of kō, the plantation ages, a time of cultural diversity,” said Miyashiro. “May we feel again the cherished dew in the plains of ʻAiea.”
